The BYU Family, Home and Social Science (FHSS) AmeriCorps program uses Members recruited from the BYU FHSS student body to increase the capacity of mental health treatment facilities. Based on the National Association of Mental Health report for 2016, there is a gap between the need for and the availability of mental health and substance abuse treatment in Utah. Our proposed program would help close this gap, providing needed services. Members will serve in a variety of service locations located in Utah and Salt Lake Counties. They will be supervised by licensed mental health professionals and will give direct clinical treatment to clients seeking treatment. Our mission statement is to support the overall mission of BYU by generating new knowledge and by educating and training students to use the appropriate knowledge, values and skills of the social work profession to serve children and families within their environment and the context of their cultures. In alignment with this mission statement, the purpose of the BYU FHSS AmeriCorps program is to provide an opportunity for Members to use their developing skills, and thereby increase the availability of mental health services in the Utah and Salt Lake County communities.
