The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System requires the use of Health Technicians, Telemetry located within the Office of Nursing Service at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, Las Vegas, Nevada. Specialty services are at various outpatient sites around the valley, with inpatient services provided at the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Hospital as part of the VA/Department of Defense Joint Venture.

Work Schedule: Services will be req! uired 24/7 at eight hour shift increments 40 hours per week.
Projected hours of operation: Monday to Saturday from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm, staff arriving at 5:00 am. Call coverage on non-scheduled hours to cover acutes.

Specific Tasks.

Operates diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments and equipment as part of the treatment of kidney failure.
Performs routine chronic and acute treatments within the unit under the supervision of an RN team leader. Responsibilities include daily treatment initiation, monitoring and termination, preparation and administration of lidocaine, heparin and normal saline for treatment; completion of appropriate care documentation.
Responsible for the routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and disinfection of equipment, water quality monitoring, restocking of supplies and preparation of dialysate concentrates for dialysis procedures.
Supports physicians or other medical professionals in using therapeutic instruments, equipment, and accessories. Equipment includes th! e dialysis machine, dialyzer, reverse osmosis water system, dialysate delivery system, bicarbonate-mixing tank, and other comparable therapeutic instruments or equipment.
Receives and interprets requests or instructions from the physician/RN on the stable chronic renal failure patients, and can independently carry out assignment under the supervision of an RN to hemodialyze patients using the appropriate dialyzer, treatment time, heparin dose, prescribed dialysate concentrate and machine settings.
Prepares all necessary equipment or supplies for dialysis procedures and records information.
Transports equipment to other areas in hospital where needed for treatment of acutely ill patients. Ensures proper cleaning and/or sterilization of equipment. Performs minor maintenance and adjustments as needed.
Mixes and prepares chemical concentrate and checks various solutions for dialysis treatment.
Monitors water treatment systems in the Hemodialysis Unit, as wel! l as portable reverse osmosis (RO) units to ensure that water is within! established quality standards and reports all deviations. Collects specimens from equipment for chemical and bacterial analysis according to Unit protocol.
Independently performs daily checks in the process of monitoring equipment in the dialysis unit.
Performs and documents pre and post dialysis observations, including weight, BP, HR, temperature, pain level.
Cannulates AV grafts and AV fistulas per Hemodialysis Unit policy and procedure to initiate Hemodialysis treatment.
Initiates, monitors and terminates treatment for the chronic dialysis patient according to Hemodialysis Unit policy and procedure and under the supervision of the RN.
Performs a variety of personal care or nursing care activities that do not require practical or vocational nursing licensure, or professional nurse education.
Instructs patients in the performing self/home treatments activities that may include machine set-up, priming, monitoring during treatment, responding to alar! m settings, removing disposable supplies, and placing machine in disinfection mode.
Observes aseptic technique with the dialysis procedure and follows the principles of universal precautions and infection control.
Performs procedures to obtain diagnostic tests, such as, blood specimens.
Prepares quality control specimens, conducts quality control procedures on equipment and reagents, and maintains proper records for quality reports. Collects appropriate water and dialysate samples for testing of water and dialysate quality.
Demonstrates knowledge of basic principles of dialysis water treatment and specific standards for dialysis. (AAMI standards)
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the principles, theories, procedures, and practices appropriate to perform Hemodialysis treatments safely and effectively.
Performs or supervises routine housekeeping duties to assure that the dialysis treatment area is clean and sanitary.
Is aware of and pract! ices the safety policies/procedures of the medical center, and particip! ate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities as directed.
The HD technician should report and document pertinent findings arising during the treatment.
Reports equipment malfunction, abnormal pressure readings etc. and any other technical issues to the lead technician or biomedical technician. Pulls malfunctioning equipment out of service and red tags such equipment’s with a description of the problem. During non-administrative hours, will directly call RO water contractor for RO system issues.
Mentors/preceptors new lower level technicians during their orientation period.

Period of Performance: From 07/08/2013 through 12/30/2013 and it may be extended, upon acceptable performance and all necessary state reviews and approvals.
